FIFA seeks to end Russia's ban from international football, ready to allow

FIFA is seeking to end the exclusion of Russia from international football, writes "Sky News" .

The decision could be taken during a FIFA Council meeting to allow Russian teams to play in the U-17 World Cups if they qualify.

The ban has been in place since Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. At the time, FIFA said it was in "full solidarity with all affected people in Ukraine".

But FIFA is seeking to ease the punishment based on how European soccer's governing body last week eased its position on Russia.

UEFA decided to end a complete ban on Russian international teams competing to allow them to take part in EURO U-17 qualifiers in the coming weeks, but without their national shirt, flag or anthem.

FIFA's decision came too late for the men's U-17 World Cup in November, but Russia could qualify for the women's competition next year.

But the decision to lift the ban on Russian teams outright has created divisions in Europe, with England threatening to boycott matches against them and Ukraine calling for the old continent to support their opponents.

However, UEFA is privately indicating that the Ukrainian government now allows their athletes to compete against the Russians who compete as neutrals.

Russia is still allowed to play international friendlies from February 2022, but has been banned from tournaments and qualifying competitions, which prevented them from qualifying for the 2022 Men's World Cup in Qatar as well as the 2023 Women's World Cup.

FIFA's media department did not respond to requests for comment last week on Russia./ Adapted in Albanian, Pamphleti .
