"Football is not only economy", Rumenige: The Spanish wanted the

As he waits for the European Court of Justice to rule on the matter tomorrow, December 21, Karl-Heinz Rumenige, former Inter player and now on the board of Bayern Munich, returns to talk about the project, interviewed by "Gazzetta dello Sport".

The manager particularly remembers the night on which the Superliga was officially born, with the constant messages from Ceferin and the inability to speak to the then president of Juventus, Andrea Anjelli. Bayern Munich, along with PSG, was the only major European club always against the idea of the Super League.

But what really happened that night? "I was worried. They were 12, they had tried in vain to convince us and others. They were at breaking point. I thought: What if they actually started a revolution? It would be chaos. After two days the blister burst.

I was at the stadium for Bayern and Ceferin was texting me every five minutes to say: Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City have withdrawn... It was over. It had 'super' inside. They wanted to be superior to everything; championships, Champions League, football. What an idea ...", - recalls Rumenige.

The founders of the Superliga had also tried to involve Bayern Munich in the project: “ They did not come to me, they tried to Oliver Kahn, my designated successor at the time. I, Uli Hënes and president Hainer said unanimously: Never! We want to win, but according to the rules. That's what PSG thought too .

Rumenige does not specifically explain the role played by Andrea Anjeli, one of the most influential managers in European football at the time: " I have not been able to speak to Andrea since Sunday when he switched off his mobile phone. There were rumours, he was not coming to Montreux and he did not answer.

I guess he didn't have the guts to say what he was doing. I understand that Covid-19 forced the clubs to hurry, someone wanted new money, but this kind of presentation was not professional. I don't understand and I'm humanly sorry. Anjeli was the president of ECA, he was in the executive of UEFA, he was the president of a team like Juventus, among the top-5 clubs. Andrea lost everything, even his image. We had a good time, but when I told him that football is not just about economics, he didn't think like me ."

Rumenige explains the reasons why he is against the Superliga: " Serie A would become Serie B and the Bundesliga as the second division. So, weak championships. And do you know why all this? To damage the top earning Premier League simply because it is the best. Especially the Spanish teams wanted to damage it and invented this project, the only one that would be worth it.

UEFA offers the best possible tournament, the new 36-team Champions League will be even more spectacular and open. Did you see Copenhagen's celebrations for qualifying for the 1/8 finals of the Champions League? Must the commoners always win? Not in football, this sport is based on the unthinkable, emotion. There is no math. The American model? Merit prevails in us. If you're good, you win ."
