Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka is having an incredible season with the English team, as his influence within the team has attracted the attention of former players and sports analysts in England.
The Albanian midfielder has started 22 Premier League games this season, registering five assists and providing control, authority and consistency throughout the game. His contribution has been crucial to Sunderland's positive run, which currently sits ninth on 33 points, just four points off the top four.
Speaking to BBC Radio Newcastle, journalist Ian Murtagh praised Xhaka's role, both on the pitch and in the dressing room, comparing him to one of the most iconic transfers in the history of football in the north-east of England.
“ He is the most influential approach in the North East since Kevin Keegan at Newcastle in 1982 ,” said Murtagh. “ I’m not necessarily saying the best, but in terms of impact, raising standards and communicating with team-mates, I see a lot of similarities between them, even though they are 40 years apart .”
Such assessments confirm Granit Xhaka's importance in the Sunderland project, transforming him not only into a technical leader, but also into a key figure for the club's ambitions in the elite of English football.
