The Bundesliga will experiment with a radical change in the use of VAR, testing for the first time explanations of referee decisions after reviewing film footage.
Next weekend, some Bundesliga matches will see referees equipped with microphones connected to stadium audio systems. And in the event of incidents that need to be followed up on VAR monitors, the "black jackets" will explain the decision to everyone present.
This is a unique innovation in European football, especially at a level such as the Bundesliga, which was among the first championships to adopt the integration of video technology in the 2017-2018 season.
Since there have often been discussions about the ambiguity of the decision-making process by the main referees in the VAR room, this method will be experimented with to make decisions transparent in the moment for the fans present, who can understand what happened from the match referee's perspective.
Since not all stadiums are equipped with the necessary audio system, this testing will initially be carried out in a few facilities, to be extended to all elite fields in the coming weeks.
