The Portuguese media think that their captain Cristiano Ronaldo should be left on the bench in the match against France in the quarter-final stage.
Slovenia came very close to a historic victory over Portugal on Monday but lost on penalties as the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
Cristiano Ronaldo struggled throughout the match, missing some good scoring opportunities as well as a penalty in extra time that would have undoubtedly given Portugal the win.
As Ronaldo broke down in tears after missing the penalty, as he overcame his emotions and scored during the penalty shootout, many questions have been raised about the 39-year-old's goal-scoring abilities.
The Portuguese media have had their say regarding the captain's importance and place in their team.
After giving Ronaldo a score of 4/10, the Portuguese daily "Publico" wrote: " Another poor performance from the captain. Just like last game, he spent most of the time lying on the pitch.
He then made bad decisions inside the area, bad passes in front of goal, ruined some plays and was not accurate in finishing plays.
What would happen if Ronaldo came from the bench, fresh even with the tired Slovenians? We will never know ."
Not even the other well-known Portuguese medium "A Bola" was spared from criticism, according to which Ronaldo showed signs of anxiety just like in Qatar.
" It is true that Zhota isolated Ronaldo and he was the one who suffered from the penalty that Ronaldo then missed" .
" But these changes, theoretically with the aim of creating numerical superiority in Portugal's attack against the Slovenian defense, served as an image of a team that has not found its form and this gives signs of Cristiano Ronaldo's anxiety ".
It's similar to what happened at the World Cup in Qatar, where Ronaldo's tears at the end of the match against Morocco were shared around the world," their release said.
