"Lost an eye" in the ring, the 3-time world boxing champion dies

Israel Vazquez, the Mexican boxer who won three world titles, has died at the age of 46.

The president of the World Boxing Council, Mauricio Sulejman, announced the death of the Mexican this Tuesday. The boxer nicknamed "El Magnifico" revealed on November 10 that he had sarcoma, a type of cancer, The Associated Press reported.

" Israel is finally resting in peace. May God give strength to his family, we extend all our support to his wife Laura, his children, his family and friends during this difficult time. Thank you champion for leaving a special mark. You will always be 'El Magnifico '", said Sulejman in "X".

After winning in 2008, Vazquez suffered a retinal detachment and eventually lost his right eye.

In the fight for the WBC world title, Vazquez played in one of the most notable boxing trilogies of those years against his countryman, Rafael Marquez, losing in the first defense of the title, but regaining the belt in the second and defending that successfully in the third part of the trilogy. Marquez was Vazquez's last opponent in his last professional fight before hanging up the gloves in May 2010.

Vazquez finished his career with a record of 44-5, with 32 victories by knockout.
