The FIFA chief spoke about how the offside position could change: " We are reviewing the rules to make the game more attractive ."
Changing the offside rule and favoring attackers. Gianni Infantino reiterated FIFA's vision at the World Sports Summit in Dubai. " Years ago, we introduced VAR to make football fairer, to give the referee the opportunity to correct a mistake that millions and millions of people at home or even in the stadium could have seen ," explained the FIFA president. " We are constantly improving VAR with increasingly advanced technology to help referees make the right decision. We continue to review the rules, asking ourselves how we can make the game more attacking, more attractive ."
And here the idea of changing the offside rule, previously expressed but difficult to implement with the IFAB (the association that drafts and changes the rules of football), resurfaced. “ We are reviewing the offside rule, which has evolved over the years, requiring the attacker to be positioned perfectly in line with the defender: perhaps in the future, he will have to be completely in front of the defender to be in an offside position .” The idea is to declare an offside position only when the attacker is completely in front of the defender. “ But we are also evaluating measures to avoid wasting time,” Infantino added. “It is important that the game flows properly, so interruptions must be kept to a minimum .”
