Artificial Intelligence could soon enter football. According to CalcioFinanza.it, FIFA aims to use it at the 2026 World Cup to make semi-automatic offside detection even more accurate and easier to understand. Infantino, president of world football's governing body, announced the move with Lenovo.
The key element would be the introduction of 3D avatars, generated by Artificial Intelligence and incorporated into the offside position system. All participants would undergo a high-precision digital scan, a process that takes about a second and will create an extremely accurate 3D model of the body parts of the protagonists on the field.
Even with a partially obstructed view or sudden changes in vision, the movements of the players will be identified. This will result in fewer errors and VAR decisions will be made faster, at least in this regard. Furthermore, the 3D avatars will be broadcast on official television productions, eliminating any doubt. The system has already been tested at the Intercontinental Cup.
In addition, FIFA will introduce the Football AI Pro platform to support national teams in using data and developing pre- and post-match analysis, as well as an update to Referee View, which will provide smoother images.
