Referee David Coote, who was sacked by the English Football Association a few months ago after appearing in a video consuming cocaine and attacking former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
In an interview with "The Sun", the English referee admitted that he was gay and that he only drank cocaine to hide his sexual orientation and avoid the world of "macho" men in the Premier League.
Coote also admitted that he had been reckless in attacking Klopp and receiving death threats from many fans.
"I don't recognize myself in the video snorting cocaine. I don't remember how I felt then. I had problems and I chose this way out."
I felt ashamed during my teenage years. I didn't tell my parents about my sexual orientation until I was 21. I didn't do the same with my friends until I was 25.
"I hid my feelings as a young referee and I hid my sexuality. I was a good referee but a bad person. And that led to a series of behaviors. I take full responsibility for my actions which were dependent on what I expected of myself. I hope people understand that there were private moments where I fell very low. They do not reflect who I am today or the way I think," the British referee told "The Sun".
