At the 1994 World Cup, Colombia entered as one of the potential surprises with a golden generation. In the decisive group stage match against the USA, defender Andres Escobar tried to stop a cross but inadvertently deflected the ball into his own net.
The US won 2-1 and Colombia was eliminated from the World Cup, a heavy blow to a nation already under great pressure from violence, politics and drug cartels.
Just 10 days later, on July 2, 1994, Escobar was with his friends in Medellin. After they parted ways, he was left alone in a parking lot, where he was confronted by several men who taunted him for the own goal he had scored. One of them pulled out a gun and shot him six times, shouting “Gooooool” after each shot.
He was only 27 years old...
After the match, Escobar wrote: “ Life doesn’t end here .” But, for him, it did. His death became a symbol of how deeply football had fallen into the hands of Colombia’s darkest forces.
