The match between Lazio and Roma today in Serie A was, as always, preceded by chaos and violence, as fans of both teams managed to break through the numerous police cordons and clash with each other.
The police had been trying all afternoon to keep the groups of ultras apart, but as match time approached and supporters approached the stadium, it was impossible to avoid such a clash at Ponte Milvia.
The police were forced to use tear gas and water cannons to disperse groups of fans who, armed with riot gear and more, were attempting to turn the streets of Rome into a veritable arena for fighting.

Police had today stopped almost all vehicle traffic on the roads leading to the stadium, with over 2,000 police forces deployed to avoid the usual violent contacts between the parties.
Precedents - In mid-January 2024, the capital's derby returned to being played at night after several seasons, with both groups of fans passing a maturity test. However, the police had secured the area around the stadium in the days before the match and unfortunately on this occasion the tension outside the playing area required a police intervention.
Around 1,500 officers are on standby, plus the carabinieri, financial police and local police.
