An incident occurred at the opening of the Olympic Games yesterday evening, where South Korean athletes were mistakenly introduced as North Korea at the opening ceremony in Paris.
As the excited team floated down the Seine River, both French and English announcers introduced them as the "Democratic People's Republic of Korea" - North Korea's official name.
The Olympic organizers reacted immediately by deeply apologizing for the mistake. The two Koreas have been separated since the end of World War II, with tensions between the states escalating further in recent times.
South Korea's sports ministry said it planned to file a "strong complaint with France at the governmental level" over the embarrassing gaffe.
In a statement, the ministry expressed "regret for the announcement ... where the South Korean delegation presented itself as the North Korean team."
Second Vice Sports Minister Jang Mi-ran, the 2008 Olympic champion in weightlifting, had requested a meeting with Olympic Committee president Thomas Bah.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) apologized on its official Korean-language account to X, saying: " We would like to deeply apologize for the mistake that occurred in the introduction of the South Korean delegation during the opening ceremony ."
South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea, has 143 athletes on its Olympic team this year, competing in 21 sports. North Korea has sent 16 athletes.
This is the first time she has competed at the Olympics since Rio 2016.
