FIFA has officially reacted to the disallowed goal of Croatia against Portugal, a decision that would have brought the score to 2-2. According to the institution, the goal was disallowed thanks to the technology integrated into the official World Cup ball, which identified a decisive touch during the build-up to the action.
In its announcement, FIFA emphasizes that the "Connected Ball Technology", integrated into the official adidas Trionda ball, confirmed the contact of Croatian player Igor Matanović with the ball, directly influencing the decision for an offside position.
" According to the data provided by the 'Connected Ball Technology', integrated into the official match ball of the FIFA World Cup, the adidas Trionda, it was confirmed that there was contact with the ball by Croatia player Igor Matanović (number 20) during the build-up to the goal against Portugal. This allowed the referee to correctly determine the offside position and disallow the goal.
"The IMU sensors located inside the Trionda ball are able to detect even the slightest touch of the ball. This was displayed to viewers during the broadcast through a graphic called 'heartbeat', giving match officials an unprecedented level of data to make quick and accurate decisions ," FIFA's official response reads.
Portugal won the match, and in the round of 16 they will face Spain in one of the strongest challenges of the tournament.
