Lionel Messi is blocked at Beijing airport, he used the wrong passport

Lionel Messi, one of the world's best footballers, was detained at Beijing airport after using a Spanish passport instead of an Argentinian one, the island's media revealed.

The 35-year-old has landed in the Chinese capital to join his team-mates ahead of friendlies against Australia and Indonesia. He traveled by plane and was accompanied by a close friend, Angel Di Maria.

The flight went according to plan, but Messi ran into a problem at passport control. Local media claim he believed it was OK to enter the country on his Spanish passport, as their citizens can enter Taiwan without a visa.

Airport staff were puzzled that he had not brought his birth documents, but after a wait of just over 30 minutes, Messi was granted a visa and on his way to the training camp.

Reigning world champions Argentina face Australia at the Beijing Stadium on Thursday (June 15), before taking on Indonesia at the Jakarta Stadium on Monday (June 19).
