A youth football match in Naples between the U-14 men's team of Don Guanella, a club run by Don Aniello Manganiello, known for its anti-Camorra commitment, and the U-17 women's team of Napoli, has ended in a wide-ranging scandal due to sexist insults and offensive behavior towards the players.
The incidents began on the field with inappropriate jokes and then continued on social media, where some young players published comments and posts with offensive and discriminatory language towards girls.
In an open letter published on Facebook, the girls' football club denounced a series of "sexist and unacceptable" behaviors that "have nothing to do with sport or fair competition."
According to the club, the underage players faced degrading comments, offensive innuendo and harassment, including through private messages after the match. "This is not mockery, this is not football. This is a social scourge," the statement said.
The match was tense and ended 4–2 in favor of the boys' team. But what happened after it caused much greater outrage: some Don Guanella players published photos and videos on social media accompanied by sexist and offensive slogans, which brought immediate reactions from the girls' club and from Don Manganiello himself.
The case has also attracted the attention of MP Francesco Emilio Borreli, who described the behavior as "unacceptable sexism" and an indicator of "moral decline" among some young people.
" I am deeply angry and disappointed ," said Don Manganiello, who has been using football as a tool for educating and de-criminalizing youth in suburban areas for years. He stressed that the behavior of some of the players "undermines the good work done over the years" and promised immediate disciplinary action.
" Some of our players made serious mistakes. There will be serious penalties and we will start special courses on respect for women and against vulgar language ," he added.
Following the public denunciation, the Italian Football Federation (FIGC) is expected to consider opening disciplinary proceedings. The institutions and the girls' club are calling for the episode to serve as an example to combat the culture of insults and discrimination in youth sports.
