The Portuguese football team gathered for the first time after the tragic loss of Diogo Jota, the former Liverpool and Lusitanian national team striker, who died in July along with his brother in a car accident.
On the eve of the 2026 World Cup qualifying matches against Armenia and Hungary, the team led by Roberto Martínez held a touching ceremony at the Lisbon training center to remember Zhota.
An emotional moment was the unveiling of a bronze jersey with his name on it, which was made public by his wife Rute Cardoso, who had been married for just 11 days. The ceremony was attended by Cristiano Ronaldo, his national team teammates, family, agent Jorge Mendes, and the top management of the Portuguese team.
Ruben Neves, one of Zhota's closest friends, honored the moment of their embrace by getting a tattoo and has decided to wear the number 21 jersey on the national team, to immortalize it forever.
" More than friends, we are family. Diogo will always be with us, on and off the field ," Neves said with tears in his eyes.
Portugal aims to secure qualification, but above all, to keep alive the memory of one of its most beloved players.
