It's official: The Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix, scheduled for April, have been cancelled from the Formula 1 World Championship calendar due to the war in Iran and the tense situation in the Middle East. These races will not be replaced by others. The announcement was made in the early hours of Sunday morning in Shanghai, on the eve of the Chinese Grand Prix. Formula 1 was due to race in Bahrain on April 12 and in the Saudi city of Jeddah on April 19.
"Although it was a difficult decision to make, it is unfortunately the right one at this time, given the current situation in the Middle East," said Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of Formula 1. "I would like to take this opportunity to thank the FIA and our incredible promoters for their full support and understanding, as they were looking forward to welcoming us back with their usual energy and passion. We hope to be back there as soon as circumstances allow."
On the other hand, the president of the FIA, Mohammed Ben Sulayem, stressed that: “The FIA will always put the safety and well-being of our community and our colleagues first. After careful assessment, we have taken this decision with full responsibility. We hope for calm, security and a speedy return to stability in the region. My thoughts are with all those affected by the recent events.”
