Four years ago when I was 69 years old. I was very fit, despite my age. I was doing everything, playing golf, tennis, swimming. But now I can't do anything. I am very tired. I can just talk, like I'm doing now (laughs). But I can do it like that. I'm lucky to have had this mindset all my life.
How life-changing can such news be?
My life is full of such stories. I lost mine when I was 11 years old. From a family of 9 brothers, only 3 survived. It's a genetic matter. My wife died at the age of 39. I am used to walking alongside death. At the moment I'm alive and that's what matters.
What would you say to Van Gaal 50 years ago?
To be a little more patient with the media. Who is not responsible for what they ask, but for what he answers. I should have known this better then. Let's talk a little about football.
Which team is the favorite for this European in your opinion?
It is too hard. In the first impression I thought of Spain, then Germany. I also see the Netherlands and Portugal as teams with options to win. It will depend a lot on the form of the players. France are an incredible team, but Mbape got them into trouble. Luck is definitely needed in such competitions. England for example has missed a lot. Although it is the land of football, it has never left its mark. The Premier League is one of the best championships in the world, but they don't win many Champions Leagues. This makes me think that in the first place is La Liga. It is better tactically and technically. Spain is the favorite, but you never know.
And the Netherlands, where do you see it?
I can't say. But I hope we get lucky, because we need it. We have to be lucky with the referees as well.
Morata has said that the Spanish are too pessimistic about themselves. Do you think he is right?
I had the same feeling 30 years ago. If Morata said it, it means that he received a lot of criticism. But Lamin Jamal has received many accolades. Everyone has their own approach.
Will we see Van Gaal in a team again?
