Mats Hummels retires from football in the summer: A moment that no footballer

Mats Hummels is ending his career after this season. The 36-year-old 2014 World Cup winner announced this on Instagram.

"After more than 18 years and so much that football has given me, I am ending my career this summer," Hummels said in a video message that recorded many moments from his career.

"When I see all of this, I know even more how much this whole journey, this whole path, means to me, how extraordinary it was to be able to experience this."

Hummels was a six-time German champion and four-time DFB Cup winner with FC Bayern and Borussia Dortmund. The centre-back most recently played for AS Roma, but was no longer a regular there. His contract expires in the summer.

The international player achieved his greatest success in 2014 when he won the World Cup in Brazil. He scored the winning goal in the 1-0 win over France in the quarter-finals; he also scored in the 2-0 win in the opening match of the World Cup and in the 4-0 victory over Portugal.

He scored five goals in 78 international appearances. He was denied the Champions League title; in 2013, in the final against BVB at Wembley Stadium in London.
