
The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, signed a decree granting Russian citizenship to American hockey player Brenan Menel.
" In accordance with paragraph "a" of Article 89 of the Constitution of the Russian Federation, I decide: to grant the citizenship of the Russian Federation to Menel Brenan Robert, born on May 24, 1997 in the United States of America," the document reads .
Menel arrived in Russia in 2022, where he became a member of Dynamo Moscow. In the last season, he played 44 games, where he scored 24 points (2+22), with an index of +11. Brenan played six games in the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL) playoffs and recorded three assists.
Menel was born in Minnesota and played for several Canadian and American hockey teams before arriving in Belarus in 2020, where he played for Dinamo Minsk in the KHL. A year later, he was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the NHL draft, and finished the season with the Philadelphia Flyers.
