The woman admitted that in reality she had chosen another, slightly different name: " I always liked Leonel ". However, on the occasion of the registration of her son in the civil status, there was disagreement with her husband Horge on this issue.
Therefore, her husband ended up naming the future champion Lionel in honor of the famous American singer Lionel Richie, whom they both liked very much. This made Selia very angry: " When Horge came to write it, I almost killed him ".
Some time later, the story reached the ears of the author of great songs such as "All Night Long", "Hello" and "Say you, Say me", as well as the very famous "We are the World" (written with Michael Jackson ), but Richi did not believe the story.
In 2016, the singer-songwriter, now 74, revealed that he initially doubted the story's authenticity, until he read it in the media:
" We were in Europe and an article came out saying that Mesi's mother confirmed that they named him Lionel because of me. I was speechless and said: so it's true !".
