It was the 2018 World Cup in Russia when Switzerland and Serbia faced each other, with the Swiss team winning 2-1.
And as fate would have it, both goals were scored by two Albanian footballers playing for the Swiss national team, Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri, who celebrated by making the Eagle sign. A moment that has not been forgotten by Serbian defender Nemanja Matic, who was present at that match.
Matic, who is currently part of Sassuolo in the Italian football championship, touched on this topic in an interview given to 'FourFourTwo', disapproving of the gesture of the two footballers.
"I respect them as footballers, I played against them a few times in the Premier League. But with that action they gained a few political points - Matic said in his interview - they grew up in Switzerland I think. By doing that gesture, you are not showing respect for the country you play for. If you like Albania so much, why don't you play for it? That's my question. You can like other countries, it's not a problem. I played against Xhaka many times and we never had any problems, we shook hands, he is a good footballer, so is Shaqiri, but I would never provoke anyone. I respect everyone," he writes.
