Another painful page in the history of Italian football was closed today: SPAL is officially a bankrupt club. The team from Ferrara, which once enjoyed Serie A glory, will no longer be part of the Italian professional football system.
After failing to register for the Serie C championship in June, the court declared bankruptcy, ending an era.
Part of SPAL for two seasons during the years 2019-2021 was the goalkeeper of the Albanian National Team, Etrit Berisha, playing 51 matches with this team in the Italian championship.
Judge Ana Gedini today ordered the judicial liquidation of Spal Srl, owned by Joe Tacopina and Marcelo Folano. A bankruptcy trustee has been appointed to administer a debt estimated to be over 10 million euros, distributed among players, suppliers and employees.
Now, the club's historic name and logo will be put up for auction, to partially repay debts and turn a new page, albeit without a direct connection to the club's illustrious past.
In place of SPAL, a new club called "Ars et Labor" has been created, which has registered to participate in the "Eccellenza" championship, the fifth category of Italian football. However, the new club does not have the right to use either the logo or the name "SPAL" for the time being.
SPAL's last official match remains the Lega Pro playout against Milan Under-23, nearly three months ago, a match that sealed the fall of the Rossoneri youth team and, indirectly, marked the end of a long history for the club from Ferrara.
Another historic club that disappears from the scene, amid financial crises, mismanagement and lack of support. Ferrara will start from scratch, with the hope of reviving in the years to come./ Gazetta dello Sport
