A star striker in Maradona's Napoli, a talent scout as a coach at Udinese, but also a former child who forgave the most painful crime.
Andrea Carnevale has many stories to tell, and he has done so in a book – “Destino di un bomber” – leading a media campaign against femicide and domestic violence. A battle rooted in his personal story, that of a child who saw his mother killed by his father with an axe.
“ I’ve felt better since then .” Carnevale, interviewed by “La Gazzetta dello Sport,” explains that speaking openly (for the first time in 2024 in an interview with “Il Messaggero”) about what happened to his family helped him: “ I met so many women under protection, it touched me. I wanted to bring my story to light .”
Carnevale, somehow, managed to forgive his father, who eight years later in 1983, committed suicide while interned in the Aversa penal asylum:
“ I always went to visit him in prison, I wanted to see if he was okay. We never talked about it as a family, he committed suicide in front of my eyes because he had brutally attacked me. I had a sick father. We are talking about 50 years ago, there were no resources or medicines that we have today, but, of course, something could have been done. There were warning signs every night .”
During his conversation with the newspaper, he also explained what it meant to him to become a father and what kind of parent he is: “ Loving and affectionate, not the best communicator, but I'm getting better. Unfortunately, no one ever taught me that. ”
