Iran's national football team has reacted strongly to statements by US President Donald Trump, who had suggested that the Iranian team's participation in the 2026 World Cup could pose a security risk.
In a message published on the official Instagram account of the Iranian federation, it is emphasized that participation in the tournament does not depend on the decision of a single country. According to the federation, the rules and organization of the World Cup are determined by FIFA and not by the host country.
" No one can exclude us. FIFA decides, not a single country. We have qualified on the field ," the federation's response states.
The statement also notes that the Iranian national team has secured participation in the 2026 World Cup thanks to its sporting results in the qualifying phase, being among the first teams to secure a ticket to the final phase of the tournament.
The Iranian federation adds that no one has the right to exclude Iran from an international competition, underlining that a problem can only arise if the organizing country is unable to guarantee the safety of the participating delegations.
" Of course, no one can exclude the Iranian national team from the World Cup. On the contrary, the country that should be questioned would be the one that holds the title of 'host' but is unable to guarantee the safety of the participating teams ," the statement said.
The Iranian federation's reaction comes after US President Donald Trump commented on the issue on his social media. He stated that the Iranian national team is welcome to the tournament, but warned of potential security risks.
" The Iranian national team is welcome at the World Cup, but I don't think it's appropriate for them to be there, for their lives and their safety ," Trump said.
However, the official stance of the organizers remains that decisions on participation in the World Cup are made by FIFA and its president, Gianni Infantino, in accordance with sporting rules and the results achieved on the field.
