Lionel Messi has been named the best player of the year in the American soccer championship for the second year in a row, setting a new record as he becomes the first footballer in the history of Major League Soccer to win this award for two years in a row.
Likewise, Messi also won the Golden Boot with the 38-year-old ending the championship with 29 goals scored and 19 assists, surpassing the 20 goals and 16 assists of 2024.
With a combined contribution of 48 goals and assists, Messi's tally is the second-best in MLS history behind Carlos Vela's in 2019. Lionel Messi also set a record in the MLS Playoffs with 6 goals scored and 9 assists in this stage of the championship.
Since his transfer in July 2023, Messi has led Inter Miami to victory in the Leagues Cup in 2023 and the Supporters' Shield in 2024 and has a contract with the Florida team until 2028.
The London Donovan MLS MVP Award in the American soccer championship has been awarded since 1996. Lionel Messi is the second footballer to win this award twice after Preki in 1997 and 2003 and the fourth player to win both the MVP award and the Golden Boot of the Championship in the same season.
