Ivan Tonej, the 29-year-old English striker with seven appearances and one goal for the Three Lions, was arrested in London overnight after punching a fan he considered too annoying in the face in a bar in the British capital.
The player, who transferred to Al-Ahli in Saudi Arabia last summer for 40 million euros, and where he earns 25 million euros per season, was handcuffed at the scene and escorted by the Metropolitan Police, as shown in a video posted on social media.
According to witnesses, Tonej was approached by several young men who tried to take a selfie in an intrusive manner. The player responded by defending himself, fearing an attack and possible theft of his jewelry. The victim suffered fractures to his nose and little finger, but his injuries are not serious.
Police confirmed his arrest on two counts of assault and one count of affray, while the player was subsequently released on bail pending an investigation.
