Sir Alex Ferguson's tough management style could have landed him in trouble with the law, according to former Manchester United defender Patrice Evra. With the Scot's notoriously fearsome treatment of players and his difficult figure with rivals and referees, tales of the Scot's tough approach continue to this day, even though he retired from football in 2013.
But Evra, who won five Premier League titles and a Champions League at United under the legendary manager, joked that Ferguson's archaic methods could be downright criminal if applied today.
" If Ferguson were a coach now, he would probably end up in prison ," the Frenchman said on the "SDS" podcast.
" There's no way Ferguson wouldn't be in prison for what he did. Do you know how many players I've seen cry because he gave them the 'hair dryer' treatment, throwing shoes at them, he was mean ."
Perhaps Ferguson's most famous dressing room incident came after United's FA Cup fifth-round defeat to Arsenal in the 2002-03 season. The Red Devils manager argued with star player David Beckham before throwing a boot at the former England captain. The midfielder was later seen with a stitch in his eye during training. But, as Evra recalled, Ferguson's desire to win did not stop with official matches. In fact, his anger extended to then-young player Danny Welbeck after he missed a penalty in a friendly against Saudi Arabia.
" Wayne Rooney gave the ball to Welbeck, but he missed the penalty ," said Evra.
" We lost the game, but it was a friendly, like a 45-minute game. When we got back to the dressing room, Ferguson shouted 'Welbeck!' Welbeck and I were in the toilet, he was peeing, but Ferguson was shouting. Who the hell do you think you are? Coming into the first team, taking a penalty. I said 'boss, it's just a friendly'. He said 'what the hell friendly '."
