Spain is preparing as best as possible for "EURO 2024" where they have rivals in the group stage, Albania. The Football Federation (RFEF) is in complete chaos and today was the next act of ugly events that show that the institution of football in this country has been very problematic in terms of direction. As if the impeachment for the president Luis Rubiales' kissing scandal was not enough, now the former leaders and those who are currently in the RFEF, are under investigation by the police for corruption and money laundering.
Today, the police raided the offices of the institution that runs football in Spain, seizing many documents, just as they did in the homes of some of the top leaders of this institution, who were in office even when Luis Rubiales was president. The Spanish media reports on 7 people who have been arrested, while others are being sought. Luis Rubiales himself must be brought before the judicial authorities, but at the moment he is not in Spain, but in the Dominican Republic where he already has his residence.
Under investigation is the issue of the contract that the RFEF signed with Saudi Arabia for the development of the Spanish Super Cup there, against a payment of 40 million euros per year. Among those arrested is the legal advisor Tomas Gonzalez Cueto, as well as the former arbitrator and now the legal director of the Federation, Pedro Gonzalez Segura, who were the ones who had signed the agreements with the Arabs.
The contract in question was concluded with the mediation of the company "Kosmos", which is owned by Gerard Pike. The latter received 24 million euros for the work it carried out during the deal, which brought a total of 240 million euros to the coffers of the Spanish Federation.
At the same time, the agreements with the province of Andalusia are also being investigated, to regularly play in Seville the matches of the national age groups. The full list of the accused and all the charges are not yet known, as the court that issued the warrant for the raid has decided that for the moment its acts are protected by investigative secrecy.
