The Milan prosecutor's office is deepening its investigation into the refereeing system in Italian football, amid suspicions of favoritism and interference in the use of the VAR system. The focus of the latest investigations has ended with a suspected meeting held on April 2, 2025 at the San Siro stadium, where it is suspected that the appointment of referees in favor of Inter was discussed.
According to investigators, the meeting may have been attended by Giorgio Shanone, the black and blue club official responsible for relations with referees, along with former Italian referee designer Gianluca Rocchi.
Although Shenone is not currently under investigation, he is expected to be questioned on May 8 by prosecutor Maurizio Ascione, who is leading the investigation into the alleged refereeing scandal in Serie A.
According to preliminary charges, Roki is suspected of having, in collaboration with other persons, influenced the selection of referees for several important Inter matches.
One of the cases under investigation concerns referee Daniele Doveri. Investigators allege that he was assigned to the second leg of the Coppa Italia semi-final between Milan and Inter, with the intention of not refereeing the eventual final or other important Inter matches in Serie A, as he was considered "not preferred" by the neroli club.
Also under investigation is the appointment of referee Andrea Colombo for the Bologna-Inter match on April 20, 2025. According to suspicions, Colombo was seen as a "favorite" referee by Inter.
The name of Giorgio Shenone has emerged through the wiretaps of Gianluca Roki. In a conversation held in April 2025 between Roki and Andrea Gervasoni, the VAR supervisor, currently suspended and under investigation, a person identified only as "Giorgio" is mentioned.
Based on the analysis of the intercepts and evidence collected, the Prosecutor's Office and the Guardia di Finanza are investigating the possibility that Shenone was present at the meeting held at "San Siro".
In one of the intercepted conversations, investigators interpreted the phrase "they don't want to see him anymore" as a reference to referee Daniele Doveri.
The main point of the investigation remains determining whether or not the suspected contacts and influences on referee appointments constitute elements of sports fraud.
