Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have lost millions of followers on Instagram in a matter of hours, following a massive cleanup operation undertaken by the social platform.
The sudden drop in the number of followers is not related to any controversy or negative reaction from fans, but to the removal of fake profiles, inactive accounts, and automated users, known as "bots."
According to foreign media reports, Cristiano Ronaldo lost over eight million followers, dropping from 674 million to 666 million followers on Instagram. Meanwhile, Lionel Messi suffered a drop of more than five million followers, as his account fell from 512 million to 507 million.

However, despite this significant decline, both footballers continue to remain among the most followed characters in the world on the social network Instagram.
Social media platforms regularly conduct checks and deletes of suspicious accounts to increase the authenticity and trustworthiness of interactions on the platform. However, the scale of the recent purge on Instagram has surprised many users and public figures.
