George Russell won the Canadian Grand Prix Sprint Race in Formula 1, after starting the race from pole position and managing to maintain the lead until the end on the Montreal track. The British Mercedes driver left behind McLaren's Lando Norris, while Andrea Kimi Antonelli finished the race in third place.
The most talked about moment of the race was the fierce duel between the two Mercedes drivers. From the first laps, the Italian talent Antonelli tried to attack Russell for the first place, but encountered difficulties in direct duels with his teammate. At one point, the 19-year-old ended up off the track, while in another attempt he was forced to brake hard after Russell's defensive maneuver.
Immediately after the episode, Antonelli reacted angrily in radio communication with the team, describing the situation as “unfair.” Mercedes boss Toto Ullf asked the Italian driver to focus on the race and avoid public comments on the incident.
After the tension with Russell, Antonelli also lost position to Lando Norris and was under pressure from Lewis Hamilton for several laps. However, the Italian recovered his pace towards the end of the race and tried to return to second place, but without success, securing the podium with third place.
McLaren's Oskar Piastri finished fourth, while Ferrari continued to disappoint with Charles Le Clerc and Lewis Hamilton finishing fifth and sixth respectively. Hamilton lost two positions on the penultimate lap.
Further, Max Verstappen with Red Bull only finished in seventh place, while debutant Arvin Lindblad closed out the points zone in eighth place.
The Sprint result confirms Mercedes' good form this season, with Russell and Antonelli continuing to lead the drivers' standings. The main race of the Canadian Grand Prix will take place on Sunday at 22:00.
