Former AEK footballer Marios Ekonomou is in critical condition after a serious road accident that occurred in Ioannina, Greece.
According to preliminary information reported by local media, the motorcycle driven by the 34-year-old collided with a vehicle under circumstances that have not yet been fully clarified. As a result, the Economist suffered very serious injuries, mainly to the head.
The injured man was immediately transported to the University Hospital of Ioannina, where he is being treated under intensive care by doctors.
Greek police announced that they were informed about the accident at around 12:45, near Hatzikostas Hospital in Ioannina. The other vehicle was driven by a 63-year-old man. No arrests have been made so far, while the prosecution has been informed about the incident.
The AEK club reacted through a statement, expressing support for the former player and his family.
The EKAB ambulance and the Ioannina Traffic Police forces immediately arrived at the scene, managing traffic and launching investigations to determine the exact causes of the accident.
Residents of the area and drivers passing by said that this road segment is considered dangerous and serious accidents have occurred in the past. They are calling for interventions to increase road safety.
Greek media also report that a police crane was also at the scene, having been initially called to transport another vehicle stuck nearby.
