The Czech Republic have almost certainly lost their chance to qualify for the 2026 World Cup after their humiliating defeat to the Faroe Islands on Monday. And although the team is almost certain of finishing second in their group and making the play-offs, as they will play their final match against Gibraltar, the Czech Football Federation leaders have not yet accepted the loss.
The Federation's board meeting today decided to immediately dismiss coach Ivan Hasek, as well as his assistant, Jaroslav Veseli. The board assessed that this was the most appropriate thing to do after a defeat against a team like the Faroe Islands.
In the coming days, the new coach will also be selected, who will lead the team in the friendly against San Marino and the match against Gibraltar, in which the objective is undoubtedly victory and preparation for participation in the “play-off”. According to the current situation, the Czech Republic would see itself in the second pot for the draw of the “play-off” phase, having Albania and Kosovo among the possible opponents in the semi-finals.
