UEFA is considering a change to the format of the qualifiers for the World and European Championships.
This is what the French daily 'L'Equipe' publishes, according to which the European football government seeks to avoid boring and unbalanced matches and especially wants to offer more direct matches between the big teams.
According to this daily, UEFA has been discussing this for a long time and is considering applying a model similar to that of the Champions League. President Aleksander Ceferin also touched on this issue at the Football Summit in Lisbon when he spoke about the possibility of a new, more modern format. In particular, the Nations League is seen as a way of qualifying or adapting a system similar to the Champions League by creating a single group of 54 teams or two groups of 27.
This would allow for more challenges between the top national teams, without affecting the chances of the smaller teams. But this format, if approved, would only come into effect after 2028, when all current television contracts expire.
Furthermore, a new qualifying format based on the Champions League model would also bring economic advantages to the Federations themselves through television deals, with more attractive and spectacular challenges.
