Serie A moves to Australia, Italian Federation makes decision on week 26 match

Milan's Serie A clash with Como, scheduled to be played on February 7-8, 2026, could become the first major European league match to be played abroad.

The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) gave the green light on Thursday, with the match likely to take place in Perth, Australia.

The change of venue stems from Olympic logistics rather than commercial ambition, as Milan's iconic San Siro stadium will not be available that weekend when it will host the opening ceremony of the Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics on February 6.

The proposal moves European football into uncharted territory, after previous requests to hold domestic league matches abroad were rejected by authorities.

" The Federal Council gave a positive opinion on the request of Lega Serie A to play the Milan-Como match in Perth ," the FIGC said in a statement.

" This brings what would be a historic 'trip' abroad for a Serie A match closer ."

However, the FIGC warned that the "complex authorisation procedure" still requires formal approval from Football Australia, UEFA, the Asian Football Confederation and FIFA.
