Lionel Messi's night in New York was more than just a brace. He showed his authority, lifted his teammates, and led Inter Miami into the knockout stages with class and ruthless efficiency.
The first goal came just before the end of the first half, when Inter Miami struck against the flow of the game.
Sergio Busquets intercepted the ball in midfield and passed it to Messi, who with a single touch sent the ball towards Baltasar Rodríguez.
The young man skillfully entered the area and shot low past the goalkeeper, the score 1-0.

That lead lasted until the 74th minute, when Messi caught the eye. Busquets orchestrated the play again, splitting the New York defense with a precise pass. Messi ran, beat a defender and calmly slotted the ball home to double the lead.
In the 83rd minute they won a penalty after a foul in the area. Messi did something powerful: instead of taking it himself, he passed the ball to Luis Suárez, his old friend and teammate, who converted it into a goal.
But Messi wasn't done. In the 86th minute, with the game coming to a close, he picked up the ball on the right wing, cut inside carefully and fired a low shot past the goalkeeper into the far corner to seal the 4-0 lead.
