On Tuesday evening, there was great tension in the center of Nice, where incidents involving Roma fans broke out on the eve of the Europa League match between the yellows and the French team. According to “L'Equipe”, 102 people “in possession of weapons” were arrested and taken into custody. The newspaper cited sources from the Alpes-Maritimes police.
The incidents reportedly took place in the centre of 'Place Maséna', in the heart of the French Riviera city. According to a witness, also quoted by Nice-Matin, the fight began after some fans, sitting on the terrace of a restaurant, started throwing glasses at the police, triggering a chase through the streets of old Nice. Some of those arrested were wearing hoods to avoid being recognised.
Over 200 police officers, including two mobile units, were deployed in the city centre to quell the incidents. Dangerous objects, such as iron bars, broom handles, plastic pipes, shovels, knives and hammers, were seized from Roma fans.
The Roma ultras were transferred to various police stations and handed over to the courts under the authority of the Nice prosecutor. The seizure and the rapid response of the French security forces prevented further violence and damage in the city center.
Today at 21:00 Nice and Roma play in the first round of the Europa League.
