An unsportsmanlike incident occurred on August 12 in St. Petersburg, during the Zenit–Rubin match for the group stage of the Russian Cup. Albanian striker Mirlind Daku became the target of insults and abusive chants from the home fans, causing the Russian Football Federation to react. The head of the Disciplinary Committee, Artur Grigoryants, told RIA Novosti that the episode will be reviewed at the meeting on August 20.
In the match, Zenit won 3-0 against Rubin Kazan, while Daku scored a goal that was canceled by VAR. In the summer, Zenit had shown interest in transferring the Albanian striker, but the agreement was not reached and the Kazan club extended the contract of the 27-year-old, writes A2 CNN.
Meanwhile, Daku's name is increasingly linked to Fiorentina, as Italian media report concrete interest in him. In the last challenge, he was not the protagonist as usual: only two shots, one offside position and four duels won out of 14. The opposing coach admitted that the defense had received special instructions to stop him.
