The entire Executive Committee of the Football Association of Malaysia has resigned over a scandal involving the naturalization of 7 foreign-born footballers, which also led to sanctions from FIFA.
All members of this Committee, who were elected 11 months ago for the 2025-2029 term, resigned immediately after a unanimous and willing decision with the aim of protecting the credibility of the Federation.
The mass resignations followed FIFA's decision in September last year to fine the federation around $450,000 and suspend seven players for a year after it was found that they had presented false documents to obtain naturalization. Players Facundo Garcés, Rodrigo Holgado, Imanol Machuca, João Figueiredo, Gabriel Palmero, Jon Irazabal and Héctor Hevel were also fined individually. The seven players are from Argentina, Brazil, the Netherlands and Spain and have played for Malaysia, including in a 2027 Asian Cup qualifier against Vietnam.
Malaysian officials had claimed that all the players complied with FIFA rules because each had a grandparent born in Malaysia. But FIFA said its investigators had obtained documents from the players' countries of origin that contradicted such claims.
