The New Democracy party of Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has announced the first 28 names of candidates for the European elections on June 9.
One of them is the Olympic champion Pirro Dhima, the President of the World Weightlifting Federation. He is the vice president of the World Weightlifting Federation. For a few days now, Prime Minister Mitsotakis has been accepting suggestions that, in addition to Pirro Dhima, Fredi Beleri should also be placed on the list, as according to his advisors, he will be able to concentrate more votes from the extreme right.
Former weightlifter Pirro Dhima once caused a stir with statements about his origins. In a previous interview, he caused many reactions from both sides of the border. "I am a Greek born in Albania". It was this answer that Pirro Dhima gave to the Greek journalist Elena Akrita, who called him of Albanian origin.
To clarify the debate, but also the period he spent in Albania until he left for Greece, Pirro Dhima spoke in a long interview for one of the neighboring country's media.
" I am Greek, born in Albania, in Himara from my grandfather to my grandfather from my mother and father", he explains. "This is my honor and my pride ", he continued, then stopping at the interview that caused a sensation.
