Accidents at work, the expert: The safety of workers is at risk

The number of workplace accidents in Albania increases year after year, even though more and more people of working age leave the country every year.

In an interview for Syri TV, employment expert Erion Muça, while showing the reasons why accidents occur at work, also listed the sectors where more cases of them are registered, while he also focused on the complaints that the workforce has the most.

Only at the beginning of April, two workers lost their lives due to the lack of safety conditions at work. But these are not the only cases. Despite the fact that more and more people of working age leave Albania every year, the number of accidents at work, which also result in fatalities, increases year after year.

Employment issues expert Erion Muça explains that accidents at work happen for two reasons.

Muca also listed the sectors where the most cases of accidents at work are recorded, while he also focused on the complaints that the workforce has the most.

For the year 2023, a total of 800 complaints/requests were filed, according to a report of the State Inspectorate of Labor and Social Services. Non-payment of salaries on time, non-payment of social insurance or holidays are the most common complaints of Albanian employees, employed in the state or even in the private sector.

The largest number of denunciations with 64% is in Tirana, followed by Vlora with 8%, Korça with 4%, Shkodra with 3% and Gjirokastra and Dibra with 1% each.

Although Albania lacks heavy industry, reports show that the number of people who die at work per 100,000 employees is 1.4 times higher than the average of European Union countries.
