An unpleasant episode involved Italian swimmers Benedetta Pilato and Kiara Tarantino, who were detained at Singapore airport after the conclusion of the World Swimming Championships and a vacation in Bali.
According to local authorities, security cameras filmed them placing several items taken from a store inside the airport into Pilato's bag.
Both were stopped by police shortly before boarding a plane to Italy and spent several hours in custody, until the Italian Embassy and the Italian Foreign Ministry intervened. After explanations were given, they received special permission to return to Italy, escaping with only a warning.
In a public reaction, Benedetta Pilato stated that she never intended to commit inappropriate actions and emphasized that everything happened unintentionally.
" I have fully cooperated with the authorities and been transparent. Anyone who knows me knows how much I value honesty and sportsmanship ," she said.
Meanwhile, the Italian Swimming Federation has reacted with a statement, emphasizing that the incident occurred outside of official activities and during a vacation period, adding that it will carefully evaluate this issue in the future.
