Real Madrid have officially completed the transfer of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea, securing the services of one of the most highly regarded left-backs in European football.
The Madrid club announced on Monday that they had reached an agreement with the 27-year-old Spaniard, who has signed a six-year contract. According to reports, the operation cost Real Madrid around 60 million euros.
The transfer of Cucurella is considered the first major blow of the transfer market for the Madrid club after the appointment of Jose Mourinho to the team bench and the re-election of Florentino Perez as the club's president. The Real president has announced that he intends to further strengthen the team, with names such as Liverpool's Ibrahima Konate and Inter's Denzel Dumfries continuing to be mentioned as transfer targets.
Cucurella arrives at the Santiago Bernabeu after three seasons at Chelsea, where he was transferred in 2022 from Brighton. During this period, he became one of the most important players of the London team, while with the Spanish national team he contributed to the triumph in the 2024 European Championship.
At the time of the transfer's officialization, Cucurella was with the Spanish national team at the World Cup currently taking place in North America, where Spain is preparing for its first group match against Cape Verde.
The defender's departure comes at a difficult time for Chelsea, who are facing pressure to sell some of their key players after failing to qualify for European competition next season.
Cucurella also drew attention for his statements in March, when he criticized the London club's decision to sack coach Enzo Maresca during the season. The footballer stated that the departure of the technician had negatively affected the team and that such changes should only be made after the end of the championship.
The Spanish defender is a product of Barcelona's academy and during his career has also played for Eibar, Getafe and Brighton, before moving to Chelsea and now to the Catalans' great rival, Real Madrid.
