Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is expected to travel to Paris for a key meeting with French President Emmanuel Macron, where the situation in the Strait of Hormuz and the possibility of a European mission in the region will be discussed. The meeting, scheduled for this Friday at the Élysée Palace, is also expected to be attended by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, although some participants may only be able to connect via video conference.

Meloni's participation has not yet been fully formalized, but sources from Berlin have confirmed that Germany intends to be present, making the development of a high-level summit between the four main European countries almost certain, reports the Italian newspaper  La Repubblica

The meeting comes at a delicate moment for the Italian prime minister, who has often clashed politically with Macron. In the background is the deterioration of relations with US President Donald Trump, a development that seems to have pushed Rome to get closer to its European partners on one of the most sensitive geopolitical issues of the moment.

The Strait of Hormuz is considered a critical point for the economies of the European Union, as any destabilization in this area constitutes a direct threat to energy supplies. In this context, Italy's participation in the Paris summit is seen as a cautious signal to Washington that there are alternatives to Rome's strategic approach, beyond the current pro-American line.

However, a possible European mission in Hormuz remains unclear. The first discussions are expected to focus on exchanging information and clarifying the plans proposed by France and the United Kingdom. Meanwhile, the United States is calling for an immediate commitment, while European countries insist that a lasting ceasefire should be the priority.

Italy's concrete commitment will be determined in the coming days and could go beyond sending ships to clear naval mines. France is considering the possibility of reactivating a previous mission in the area, seeking the participation of allies to guarantee security in the Strait of Hormuz.

Meanwhile, relations with the US remain complicated. Italy cannot deny a relationship described for years as "special", which culminated in Meloni's participation in the inauguration ceremony in Washington in January 2025. For this reason, signals to the White House are being given carefully.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani stressed that this is not a crisis, but rather “differences in positions,” while Lega leader Matteo Salvini mocked Trump’s statements about ending the war. For her part, Meloni called for preserving transatlantic unity during a joint conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

In this context, it is not excluded that a telephone conversation will take place in the coming days between the Italian Prime Minister and the American President, in an effort to reduce tensions and maintain balance in international relations./ Pamphlet
