It is true, as Alexander Pope once said, that to err is human. But while all men err, some are more prone to err than others. This is one of the reasons why democracy is necessary, because decisions that affect many people must be subject to careful decision-making processes, with checks and balances. The history of authoritarian and absolute rule is full of figures whose mistakes have had disastrous consequences not only for themselves but also for the societies they ruled.
There is no decision more momentous than declaring war on another country. Yet the United States has done just that without respecting either its own system of checks and balances or its own rational decision-making process. Like kings of old, America’s impulsive and lying president, Donald Trump, remains unchecked by the legislative branch and surrounded by servile people who tell him only what he wants to hear. The catastrophic consequence is already evident: America is once again embroiled in a war in the Middle East, which has claimed thousands of lives, mostly civilians, and in which war crimes have likely been committed.
No one knows how long the war with Iran will last, how many more war crimes will be committed, or how many more innocents will be killed. But Americans seem to have become so numb to Trump’s violations of human rights and the rule of law, and so overwhelmed by the constant stream of breaking news, that they have barely organized any protests. Even in our universities, usually centers of protest and dissent, fear prevails. As under all repressive regimes, the threat of economic consequences or, worse, loss of visa, facing deportation or a criminal investigation is having its intended effect.
As an economist, I am often asked what Trump’s chosen war against Iran will mean for the American and global economies. The short answer is that the longer it lasts, the greater the damage. But even if the war ends quickly, the effects will linger. After all, critical supply chains have already been disrupted and oil and gas production infrastructure has been destroyed. Most estimates suggest that repairs will take years.

America’s erstwhile allies in Europe are also being hit by rising energy prices and supply shortages caused by Trump’s policies. If European policymakers link electricity prices to gas prices (as they did at the start of the war in Ukraine), the situation could worsen. But if Europe pursues a strategy to restore its sovereignty by reducing its dependence on American technology and defense, it could strengthen its position both now and in the long term.
No matter how long the war and the current stagflationary conditions last, the long-term consequences of this episode will be profound. The hope is that the world will realize that the “volatility” of solar and wind power is much more manageable than the continued dependence on fossil fuels, which are subject to the whims of authoritarian and unpredictable figures like Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin. If Trump’s war accelerates the global green transition, then it will have at least one important upside.
Yet another nail has been added to the coffin of the peaceful, borderless world our ancestors tried to build after World War II. Under Trump, the country that laid the foundations of that world is now destroying it. Between the new Cold War with China and the apparent lack of resilience in global supply chains, there is little reason for optimism. And with democracy in the United States so weakened, human errors and their consequences are rapidly accumulating./ Project Syndicate
