Trump's message to Iran

The world's largest aircraft carrier has been ordered to leave the Caribbean Sea for the Middle East, the New York Times reports, as US President Donald Trump considers military action against Iran.

The move of the USS Gerald R. Ford, first reported by the New York Times, will bring the number of aircraft carriers in the region to two as Trump increases pressure on Iran to reach a deal over its nuclear program. The USS Abraham Lincoln arrived in the Middle East more than two weeks ago, along with nine other warships already operating in the region.

We recall that US President Donald Trump on Thursday left open the possibility of an agreement with Iran in the near future, while maintaining threatening rhetoric against Tehran.

Specifically, Trump said he "has to make a deal, otherwise it will be very traumatic" and stressed that he would talk to Tehran "as long as he wants."

"A deal could be reached next month," the US president added.

Trump has been increasing pressure on Iran to reach a deal on its nuclear program. He shared a Wall Street Journal article on his Truth Social network, citing that preparations for sending a second aircraft carrier are underway, although it will take about two weeks from final approval.

This development comes after efforts for a new round of talks with Tehran have not materialized, although Iranian officials have developed indirect contacts through intermediaries in Oman and Qatar.

Warning from Iran

Iran will attack US bases in the Middle East if attacked by US forces massing in the region, the Iranian foreign minister has warned, insisting that this should not be seen as an attack on the countries hosting them.

Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke to Qatari television Al Jazeera a day after Tehran and Washington pledged to continue indirect nuclear talks following what both sides described as positive discussions on Friday in Oman.

While Araqchi said a date had not yet been set for the next round of negotiations, US President Donald Trump said they could take place as early as next week. "We and Washington believe it should be held soon," Araqchi said.

Trump has threatened to attack Iran after a U.S. naval buildup in the region, demanding it give up uranium enrichment, a potential pathway to nuclear bombs, as well as halting the development of ballistic missiles and support for armed groups in the region. Tehran has long denied any intention to weaponize nuclear fuel production. While both sides have signaled a willingness to revive diplomacy over Tehran's long-running nuclear dispute with the West, Araqchi has opposed expanding talks.

"Any dialogue requires restraint from threats and pressure. (Tehran) only discusses its nuclear issue... We do not discuss any other issue with the US," he said. "The possibility of war is always present and we are prepared for it. This preparation aims to find solutions that avoid war. I told the American negotiators yesterday: you have two options with us: war and diplomacy. Our option is diplomacy, but we are even more prepared for both than before and we hope that America will choose diplomacy. If America launches an attack against us, we do not have the ability to attack its territory, so we will attack the American bases in the region. This will drag the entire region into war. We are not attacking neighboring countries, but American bases. There is an important difference between the two."

Last June, the US bombed Iranian nuclear facilities, joining the final stages of a 12-day Israeli bombing campaign. Since then, Tehran has said it has halted uranium enrichment activity.

Its response at the time included a missile attack on a US base in Qatar, which maintains good relations with both Tehran and Washington.
