Victim infected by "Nile fever", what should we know about the virus?

"Nile fever" has returned to Albania, taking the lives of three people. 17 cases have been confirmed so far, and another 19 are being tested.

A day ago, the head of infectious diseases at the Institute of Public Health, Silva Bino clarified in a statement to the media that 84% of the tests by PIH for this virus were carried out in the month of July.

"West Nile fever is a zoonotic disease, that is, it mainly circulates in birds and mainly affects horses in the central nervous system. But in our country we do not have a monitoring of horses for "West Nile Fever". As for the areas where we have the largest part, we have Lushnja, Fier, Kurbin and Berat (the part near Lushnja, some cases in Lezhë and Shkodër. There were no affected areas in the coastal areas ," said Bino.

But what should we know about this virus?

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, "Nile fever" is primarily spread to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.

Cases are usually registered during the mosquito season, that is, they start in summer and continue during autumn.

There are no vaccines to prevent it or medications to treat West Nile in humans.

Fortunately, however, most people infected with this virus have no symptoms. One in five infected people may have a fever or other mild symptoms.

About 1 in 150 people infected can become seriously ill and die. You can reduce the risk of infection by preventing mosquito bites./ A2CNN
