Today marks the 104th anniversary of the Congress of Lushnja.
The Minister of the Interior, Taulant Balla, said that this is the biggest political event after the Declaration of Independence, in the history of the Albanian state.
Balla emphasized that the decisions of the Lushnja Congress saved our Albania from further fragmentation.
"This Congress established the foundations of the constitutional organization and gave way to political, democratic and parliamentary life with some special findings, which were dictated by the difficult historical context" , writes Balla.
Congress of Lushnja
The Congress of Lushnja, one of the most important national assemblies in the history of the Albanian nation, officially opened its proceedings on January 21, 1920, while the proceedings took place from January 28 to 31, 1920. The purpose of holding the Congress of Lushnja was to protect the territorial integrity of Albania, the recovery of the Albanian state and ensuring its independence. It was attended by about 50 representatives from most of the provinces of the Albanian state.
The Congress of Lushnja took important political decisions. He rejected the plans of the Peace Conference in Paris and spoke for the protection at all costs of the integrity and complete independence of the Albanian state in the borders established by the Conference of Ambassadors in London in 1913. During his work, an act was approved constitutional, in which the full sovereignty of the Albanian state was reaffirmed. He chose the highest bodies of the Albanian state as the Supreme Council consisting of four people, which would perform the duties of the head of state until the final form of the regime was determined.
The National Council was created, consisting of 37 representatives, which would perform the functions of the Albanian parliament. The Congress of Lushnja overthrew the Government of Durrës and elected a new national government headed by Sulejman Delvina.
