The meeting of the municipal council in Himare, where the temporary mayor is being elected, has been interrupted due to tensions.
Calling in Greek, the residents chased the prefect of Vlora, Vangjel Tavo, from the meeting, while one of them spat in his face.
We remind you that Tavo is the Prefect of the District of Vlora, appointed in recent weeks by the government to this position.
Due to tensions, the meeting was postponed to 12:00.
The two mayors of Himara, Jorgo Goro and Fredi Beleri, are in prison. Fredi Beleri, who won last year's elections, was arrested for buying votes and was convicted by the Special Court, but the case has gone to Appeal. The incumbent chairman, Jorgo Goro, who lost the 2023 elections, was arrested a few days ago by SPAK for abuse of office in connection with the alienation of a piece of land in Dhërmi. After the arrest, he resigned from the cell.
In their absence, according to the law, the office of the mayor is temporarily taken over by the deputy mayor of the Municipality. But Himara has two such ones previously appointed by Jorgo Goro, and in this situation, it is the Municipal Council of Himara that will vote on which of them will be appointed to the office of mayor.
The two vice-presidents are Blerina Bala and Pervin Gjikuria. One of them, who will be elected, will lead the municipality until the court pronounces a final decision on the fate of Fredi Beleri, sentenced to 2 years in prison in the First Degree.
If the decision is confirmed on appeal, Himara will have to go to early elections.
